About
Abdominal Vascular Ultrasound: Assess Blood Flow in Your Abdomen
Description:
Our Abdominal Vascular Ultrasound is a specialized imaging test that uses sound waves to evaluate the blood vessels within your abdomen. It provides detailed information about the health and function of your abdominal aorta, inferior vena cava (IVC), and other major arteries.
Why Would You Need an Abdominal Vascular Ultrasound?
Your doctor may recommend this ultrasound to:
Screen for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs): Especially if you are over 50 or have risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure, or a family history of AAAs. AAAs are potentially life-threatening bulges in the aorta.
Investigate Suspected Iliac Aneurysms: To check for aneurysms in the iliac arteries, which branch off the aorta.
Evaluate Blood Flow in Hypotensive Patients: To assess blood flow in patients with low blood pressure.
Assess Absent Pulses in Distal Extremities: To determine if reduced blood flow to the legs and feet is due to vascular issues in the abdomen.
Check for Suspected Mesenteric Ischemia: To evaluate blood flow to the intestines in cases of suspected blockage.
Assess atherosclerotic disease: Plaque build up in the arteries.
Evaluate for Aortic dissections: Tears in the aorta.
Evaluate for flow-limiting states: Reduced blood flow in the abdominal vessels.
What Can an Abdominal Vascular Ultrasound Determine?
This ultrasound can help detect and assess:
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs): Size, location, and presence of AAAs.
Iliac Aneurysms: Presence and size of aneurysms in the iliac arteries.
Blood Flow in the Abdominal Aorta and IVC: To assess for blockages or narrowing.
Blood Flow in the Mesenteric Arteries: To evaluate blood supply to the intestines.
Atherosclerotic Disease: Plaque buildup in the arteries.
Aortic Dissections: Tears in the aortic wall.
IVC Pathology: Problems with the inferior vena cava.
Flow-limiting states: Reduced blood flow.
Important Note:
While ultrasound is highly effective for detecting AAAs, other conditions like aneurysmal rupture or aortic dissection may require additional imaging.
This ultrasound focuses on the major blood vessels in the abdomen, including the aorta, IVC, mesenteric arteries, and iliac arteries.
What to Expect:
The procedure is similar to a regular abdominal ultrasound. You'll lie on an examination table while a technician applies a gel to your abdomen and uses a handheld device (transducer) to capture images of your blood vessels. The images are then reviewed by a qualified physician.
