Biophysical Profile (BPP): Assessing Your Baby's Well-Being
Description:
The Biophysical Profile (BPP) is a non-invasive prenatal ultrasound test used to evaluate your baby's well-being in the third trimester of pregnancy. It combines ultrasound imaging with a non-stress test (NST) to provide a comprehensive assessment of your baby's health.
Why Would You Need a Biophysical Profile (BPP)?
Your doctor may recommend a BPP if:
You have a high-risk pregnancy.
Your baby's movements have decreased.
You have a medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Your pregnancy has gone past your due date.
There are concerns about your baby's growth.
There are concerns regarding the amount of amniotic fluid.
What Does a Biophysical Profile (BPP) Assess?
The BPP evaluates five key areas:
Fetal Breathing Movements: Assesses whether your baby is practicing breathing movements.
Fetal Body Movements: Evaluates your baby's gross body movements.
Fetal Tone: Assesses your baby's muscle tone.
Amniotic Fluid Volume: Measures the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby.
Non-Stress Test (NST): Monitors your baby's heart rate in response to movement.
What Can a Biophysical Profile (BPP) Determine?
This ultrasound can help determine:
Your baby's overall well-being.
If your baby is receiving enough oxygen.
If there are any signs of fetal distress.
The need for further monitoring or intervention.
What to Expect:
The BPP typically takes 30-60 minutes.
Ultrasound: A technician will apply gel to your abdomen and use a handheld device (transducer) to capture images of your baby.
Non-Stress Test (NST): During the NST, sensors will be placed on your abdomen to monitor your baby's heart rate and your uterine contractions. You may be asked to press a button when you feel your baby move.
The results of the BPP are then reviewed by your doctor.
